Week 5: Leadership in Higher Education

Introduction - Week Five

Leading in times of dramatic change is difficult and challenging. Higher education has seen many cycles of hype where promised changed has failed to materialize. For university leaders, the constellation of change drivers raises the stakes in organizational planning. There appears to be growing recognition that universities are entering a period of significant change. How, or the pace at which, to enact that change in HE is a central concern facing presidents and boards.

Readings & Resources - Week Five

Higher Education Network:  Take us to your leader: thoughts on leadership in higher education

The Washington Post:  The Leadership Vacuum in Higher Education

Case Study: University of Virginia

Activities - Week Five

The readings this week present a view that change is needed. The pace of change is a central question. In your reflections and comments this week, consider the broad role of the university in society and how that role is being impacted by technological change. Universities are not mirrors for society. They are also agents that comment on and change society.

How is the societal role of HE being addressed (or ignored) in the current change language?

Share your reflections and comments on your blog or in the Week Five Discussion Forum

Firing at the MOOC Moving Target
Rolin Moe, All MOOCs, All The Time
I sit down at my computer on Monday morning to see what folks wrote about re: MOOCs over the weekend.  And herein lies the problem in trying to define a learning trend/model/phenomenon/hysteria: Michael Feldstein wrote a thorough engagement of LMS companies such as Instructure throwing their hats into the higher ed MOOC fray.  Feldstein continued [...] [Link] Mon, 05 Nov 2012 22:17:37 +0000 [Comment]

Educational Leadership in Times of Revolutionary Change - CFHE12
Randolph Hollingsworth, My Day: Posts
Body: In the readings for the MOOC on the current/future state of education, EdFuture, I found this quotation: "Human history becomes more and more a race between education and catastrophe." H.G. Wells, (1866-1946) "The Outline of History" (1920) Ch. 41   Drew Faust, president of Harvard University and historian, on change management.  Her interview focuses on what she's learned from Lincoln and what the Civil War teaches us about the human tendency to resist change.... Learning Analytics and Messy Learning: Can it be Teacher and Student Centered? #cfhe12
Jonathan Martin, 21k12
As George Siemens has written in edu-cause, learning analytics, though still a young term, already suffers from “term sprawl.”  Nevertheless, he offers this definition:  "learning analytics is the measurement, collection, analysis and reporting of data about learners and their contexts, for purposes of understanding and optimising learning and the environments in which it occurs."11 I’ve [...] [Link] Mon, 05 Nov 2012 20:20:02 +0000 [Comment]

We are resistant to change?
T, lucidTranslucent
Last week was pretty interesting, but between storms, workshops, and work (it's advising and registration time), I only got away with one initial blog post last week. I did keep up with the discussion, thanks to a large part to the daily newsletter for #cfhe12. As I was reading the various blog posts, this popped up to me: MOOCs and the Teaching Profession. I was really surpsised (I think my jaw dropped) when Rolin's acquaintance told him that he didn't think teaching wa... [Link] 2012-11-05T06:00:00.000-05:00 [Comment]
